Loreto is famous for its Sanctuary. It developed around the Sanctuary of the Nazareth House, that according to tradition was translated there by angels in 1294. It is fortified by sixteenth century walls. It became the core of devotion for pilgrims visiting the town. The place developed so much as to make the building of a fortress necessary in 1469. The main square, in front of the Basilica can be reached walking through Corso Boccalini, or Via Sisto V, or through Porta Marina. A beautiful fountain dating back to the seventeenth century embellishes the square that is closed on the East Side by the Basilica. This is an imposing building in Late-Gothic style, with elements of the Renaissance.
It is worth a visit to discover all the cultural treasures it keeps. Inside, just below the spectacular Dome there is the Holy House (Santa Casa) where the Archangel gave Holy Mary the Annunciation. The Holy House is surrounded by a marble protection planned by Bramante.
It keeps inside the famous Black Madonna characterized by the traditional , dalmatic.
Baccio Pontelli, Andrea Sansovino, Giuliano da Sangallo, Luca Signorelli,
Pomarancio, Luigi Vanvitelli, Melozzo da Forlì have all contributed in the building
and decoration of the Sanctuary and Basilica. Pieces of art by Lorenzo Lotto
and an important collection of Apothecary Porcelain Jars and several
heirlooms are on show in the Museo Pinacoteca in the Apostolic Palace. The
building is on the north-west side of Piazza della Madonna. When visiting Loreto,
do not miss the shops in Corso Boccalini and the fantastic panorama enjoyable
from Porta Marina and the view of the Apses from Piazzale Loreto.
